On December 12, 2024, the kick-off conference for the MAJESTIC ZOO-S project was held at the ZOO Hotel Osijek. This project, co-financed by the EU through the Interreg IPA Cross-Border Cooperation Program Croatia-Serbia 2021-2027, brought together key stakeholders to advance family tourism in Osijek and Subotica and their respective zoos.
The conference, attended by more than 70 participants, emphasized the importance of family tourism as a vital segment of the global tourism industry. The Director of Palić Zoo expressed satisfaction with the collaboration and presented the planned projects within their zoo: “New facilities, such as the interactive Baby Zoo and the open-air classroom, will elevate the visitor experience to a higher level. We are particularly excited that these additions will provide unforgettable experiences for families and foster empathy among children through interaction with animals.”
Božidarka Golubović from the Tourist Organization of Subotica agreed, highlighting that the project not only creates new opportunities for content development but also increases the visibility of the region: “The Majestic ZOO-S project allows Subotica and Osijek to position themselves as desirable family destinations, emphasizing collaboration that contributes to the promotion and enhancement of both cities’ tourism offerings.”
Tajana Rogulja, Director of the Osijek Tourist Board, stressed how projects like this contribute to the development of diverse offerings that can meet the needs of all family members: “Family tourism is one of the most important segments of the global tourism sector. The first encounter children have with tourism should be shaped in a way that inspires them to travel in the future, and this project provides precisely that opportunity.”
As part of the project, Palić Zoo will build a modern children’s playground, an interactive Baby Zoo, and a summer classroom equipped with educational materials for schoolchildren. Meanwhile, Osijek Zoo will reconstruct the existing playground, add a sensory playground, and construct a Slavonian Village—an educational space focusing on domestic animals and traditions. Additionally, the tourist boards of Osijek and Subotica will organize a series of promotional activities, including events, fairs, the production of a promotional film, and training sessions for tourism professionals according to the “Family Welcome” standards.
After the official program, participants enjoyed a reception where they exchanged experiences, built new partnerships, and engaged in networking. The relaxed atmosphere enabled further sharing of ideas and collaborative plans. You can view how the conference unfolded in our photo gallery.
