The Palić Zoo Shelter serves as a safe haven for many injured birds, and the most rewarding and beautiful part of the work at the Zoo is the moment when, after recovery, the time comes to once again witness their flight – back into the wild.
In cooperation with the Provincial Institute for Nature Protection and the public enterprise “Palić – Ludaš,” on May 8th, strictly protected bird species from the Wildlife Shelter were released back into nature. The following species were released: Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo), European Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis), and Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), at a location within the Special Nature Reserve “Kanjiški Jaraši.”
The Common Buzzard arrived at the Shelter in February this year, where it fully recovered, and it was then decided that it would be released.
The Black Stork had been residing at the Shelter since 2022. It arrived as a young individual in need of recovery and rearing. A decision was now made to return it to the wild, as it is an autochthonous and exceptionally rare species. Its natural habitat consists of dark oak forests. It is protected by the Law on Nature Protection, as well as internationally under the Bern Convention.
